Nigeria Launches National AI Strategy to Drive Innovation and Economic Growth

Building Nigerian AI talent

A major component of the strategy is developing the people required to build and deploy AI solutions locally.Recent initiatives such as AI Academy Nigeria, launched through a partnership involving Meta, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the 3 Million Technical Talent programme and other technology organisations, are aimed at expanding AI skills and strengthening Nigeria's innovation ecosystem.The government is also supporting institutions such as the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), whose mandate includes promoting AI research, development, adoption and entrepreneurship in Nigeria and across Africa.

While the economic opportunities are significant, Nigeria's strategy also recognises the risks associated with artificial intelligence, including privacy, algorithmic bias, job displacement, transparency and the use of AI in sensitive sectors.The Federal Government has therefore emphasised the importance of responsible, ethical and human-centred AI development. The strategy seeks to ensure that technological advancement benefits Nigerians across different social and economic groups rather than creating opportunities accessible only to a small segment of the population.

From policy to implementation

Nigeria's AI ambitions are increasingly moving beyond policy development into practical implementation. The country has also been developing supporting initiatives around AI governance, infrastructure, investment, cloud computing and locally relevant AI models.Among these developments is N-ATLAS, an open-source multilingual and multimodal large language model initiative designed to incorporate Nigerian languages and Nigerian-accented English into AI development.The government has also been strengthening digital infrastructure through initiatives such as the National Sovereign Cloud framework, which is intended to support trusted cloud infrastructure, data security and emerging technologies including AI.

Nigeria's opportunity
